MAFS UK groom had football career cut short after brutal attack by nine men that left him scared to leave the house

Life can take unexpected and often cruel turns, sometimes derailing dreams and leaving lasting scars. This is the story of Steven Springett, a participant on MAFS UK (Married at First Sight UK), whose journey took a dramatic detour due to a violent attack that abruptly ended his promising football career.

Before becoming an investment banking manager from Essex and stepping into the world of reality television, Steven was a dedicated athlete with aspirations of playing professional football. He played for Ebbsfleet United, a testament to his skill and commitment to the sport. However, one horrifying night changed everything.

The brutal assault, perpetrated by a group of nine men, left Steven with severe physical injuries, including a fractured cheekbone, shattered teeth, and a damaged nose requiring extensive reconstructive surgery. But the physical trauma was only part of the story. The attack left Steven deeply traumatized, instilling in him a fear of leaving his house. He was only 34 at the time of the attack.

For six long months, Steven wore a face mask to hide his injuries, a constant reminder of the violence he had endured. He felt exposed and vulnerable, sensing the stares and judgments of others. The world, once full of promise and opportunity, now seemed like a hostile and dangerous place.

The incident occurred after Steven left a nightclub alone. He revealed that the attackers were individuals with whom he had a prior, minor disagreement at college. He even recalled one of them throwing forks at him in the canteen. He believes the attack might have stemmed from jealousy over his football talent.

Reflecting on the experience, Steven shared, "I fractured my right cheekbone, I've damaged my teeth, I've got a few scars on my chin. I shattered my nose, so I've still got a slight bend in there, but I had reconstructive surgery." The physical scars were a visible reminder of the ordeal, but the emotional scars ran much deeper.

Steven candidly admitted that the initial aftermath of the attack plunged him into a "horrible place." He felt trapped and isolated, unable to face the world with confidence. The mask, while providing physical cover, also served as a barrier, preventing him from fully engaging with life.

However, Steven's story is not one of defeat. It's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of positive transformation. Despite the immense challenges he faced, he refused to let the attack define him. He resolved to reclaim his life and find meaning in his experiences.

He realized that he couldn't control the actions of others or the healing process of his physical wounds. However, he could control his own response and his outlook on life. This realization became a guiding principle, empowering him to move forward with strength and determination.

Steven embraced his scars, both physical and emotional, as symbols of his resilience. He saw them not as marks of shame or weakness, but as badges of honor, proof that he had overcome adversity. He declared, "It shows that I've won, and they lost."

He told the Daily Mail: “My positive outlook, why I am the way I am today, the way I see the world… is because of that attack. At first it was like I've got scars on my face people are going to see me a little bit differently."

"But now I see them as the reason I am who I am. It's character building. It shows that I've won, and they lost.”

Beyond his personal transformation, Steven's story highlights the importance of mental health and the challenges faced by individuals who experience trauma. The attack forced him to confront his vulnerabilities and develop coping mechanisms to manage his fear and anxiety.

The scars weren’t going to vanish – I’m not Harry Potter… I can’t just magic them away. It was more like: ‘I can’t control how they are going to heal.’ And I’ve taken that into my life – I can only control what I can do, and if it’s out of my control, why stress about it?”

His journey also underscores the need for support systems and resources for victims of violence. Access to counseling, therapy, and other forms of assistance can be crucial in helping individuals heal and rebuild their lives.

Now, Steven is ready to find love, seeking a partner who can challenge him and keep him engaged. This willingness to open himself up to new relationships, despite his past experiences, is a testament to his courage and optimism.

Speaking of finding love, Married at First Sight UK has a track record of creating lasting connections. Take Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling from series six, who not only found love on the show but also welcomed their first child, Beau, just 18 months after meeting.

Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins from season five are another success story. They married on the show and had their first child in December, proving that the experiment can lead to real, lasting relationships. Michelle admitted she applied after being sick of dating apps.

Another notable couple from MAFS UK is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson, the show's first same-sex pairing. They navigated a rocky start due to differing lifestyles but emerged stronger, even launching a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod.

Jenna herself shed light on the show's impact. She said: “We’re not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship.”

As for the current series of MAFS UK, expert Paul promises it will be "one of the most memorable" in the show's history. This season includes a gay male pair and a lesbian twosome, marking a significant step towards greater representation and inclusivity.

Among the participants looking for love this season are: Grace, Julia-Ruth, Maeve, Neelima, Rebecca, Sarah, and Ashley. Joining them is Steven, hoping to find a connection and a fresh start after overcoming the challenges of his past.
